BRING BACK THE DAYS
The fragrance of courtesy and the worth of discipline,
respect and culture is gradually losing its savour in the sand of time . The
home used to be a cultivation ground for every child who had the opportunity of
living with a family. It was culture for a child to respect and honour elders
who had gone through the rigorous journey of life. But sadly, respect, honour,
discipline and courtesy is gradually going extinct in our modern day life as
regard to children upbringing. Most parents no more pay attention to little, little things which our parents of
old paid utmost attention to. Those little things don't matter now. It's so so
sad. A flash back to those days when children where taught to stand up for an
elder to sit down even though there was an empty sit. It was simply a sign of respect.
Those days when children were taught to never look at an elders eyes when talking
as it was termed as disrespect. Those days when kneeling or postrating to greet
an elder was a sign of good home training. Those days when children were
trained to tell the truth even in the most seeming difficult times. Days when little
things as minor as how u chew whether at home or outside the home mattered a
lot. Days when it was forbidden for a younger one to use his/her left hand to
give or take some things from an elder was a taboo. Oh! Those days when a girl
is taught to sit properly with her legs closed. Those days, yes those days when
you are taught to never walk pass an elderly man or woman without greeting or helping
to carry whatever he or she is carrying. Days when a female child will not sit
in the living room while her mother is in the kitchen especially when she's of
age to assist or be of help. Days when male child is a stand by assistant to
his father and not a loafer. Those days oh those days when a girl child is
taught to multi task in preparation for life ahead while laziness was not
tolerated. Times when education was not just the only key to financial freedom
but vocation/creativity was encouraged . Days when the rod was never spared on any
child caught or reported to display any attitude capable of tarnishing the
image of such child and that of the family. When mothers ensured that the bond
between her children and other children was a positive one, one that will add
value to that child. friendship was no respected or background(affluence) but
based on religious connection.
Can we still have the
days when proper dressing was upheld and even peers had a way of gearing at
anyone dressing out of the norm. Can we still have the days when honesty was
tagged as the best policy? Can we still have those days when communal life was
safe and done with so much love, sincerity and concern. Days when even the
government had the heart of the masses in mind and not yearning for positions
of authority to looth money and amass wealthy.
It is true that everyone who had experienced
those days of old, yearn to have it back but the question is how do we bring back
those sweet days? It's important to state that every home has a key role to play
for the days we yearn for to come right back so that the society at large might
be flooded again by serenity and blessedness.
