Experience Vs Reality Conclusion....
While Christy was having a nice family reunion with her family,
Adesola and Rukky were having a tough time full of criticism and blames from their
parents. Their parents didn't see anything good in all efforts on their studies.
They were very critical and strict though Rukky was from a broken home. This left
these promising students discouraged and unhappy. Adesola particularly didn't want
her parents to visit because her being in the boarding school was an escape from
their wrath, perpetual criticism and display of hatred. They left her with little
or no gifts and threatened to pull her out of the school if she doesn't meet their
exact expectation.
Relatively, Rukky's step father and mom were very harsh and uninterested
in knowing her challenges but emphasised how much it cost them to put her in the
big school. Their expectations was for her to do well no matter what it cost her
and be an Engineer for their selfish interest. She wanted to study Nursing for a
very sincere reason but she could never mention it to her parents for fear of being
either thrown out of the house or refused her education.
This was the cause of her constant unhappiness and incessant
annoyance at the slightest provocations in class. Adenoma on the other hand didn't
have a peaceful home though her parents were rich enough to provide all she needed.
The visitation hour was
over and the students were back to their academic life. Generous and nice students
shared the provisions they had in excess with their friends and room mates while
other withheld theirs.
Chidera was one good student but wouldn't ever share with anybody
except towards the end of exams when most students had exhausted their provision.
She gives in exchange for money and she was an SS2 student who was feared by all
junior students in her room . She didn't need to bully any student before she gets
what she wants from them, she simply asks and they without hesitation surrender
it to her. No one was courageous enough to challenge or report her to the school
authority as she was the best students in football and race who represented the
school and always won.
Hours turned into days, days into weeks and the time table for
exams was ready and displayed at the notice board. Junior students had to wait for
the seniors students to check the time table either on the notice board or in the
school's Cafe which students gained entrance to with strict supervision of the staff
in charge and their automated identity card.
It was the first day of
the examination and tension was high but Christy and her reading group friends were
calm and prepared for any exam. They had developed a logo and an anthem that read
"Yes we can, we have studied, we have prayed, we will sure come out bright
like the star". This was borne out of the need to encourage those who lacked
confidence in themselves and it sure helped.
The first paper was Biology which was a walk over for some and
a very hard puzzle for other to solve. Christy, Bella and the others smiled through
the exam except for Rukky who seemed lost in dismay. Ima-abasi
who observed it, tried to whisper to her to find out what the problem was but for
fear of being caught by the invigilator and school cameras kept calm.
Other subjects went on well as expected without any hitch. And
the day four of the exam came which was Mathematics, Christy's favourite subject
and she was so excited about it.
Just when the question and answer papers were being shared, Christy
felt dizzy and her head began to bang. She quickly beaconed on Bella who sat in
front of her. At this time, Christy was sweating profusely. Bella was scared and
didn't know what to do. She ran to the invigilator in front and alerted her. She
rushed back to Christy's seat(it was 1000 capacity hall) and found her on the floor
with those around her confused and around her seemingly lifeless body.
The teacher immediately told the students to go back to their
sits so as to allow her have some air while she told Bella to get the school's ambulance.
She ran as fast as her legs could carry her to the ambulance alert point. They responded
promptly and she was rushed to the school's hospital. They tried to know what must
have happened to Christy but they couldn't explain it with the little test they
could carry out. The Doctor in charge asked that she should be sent to a better
hospital outside the school which was quite a distance away. But the challenge was
who to accompany her and stay there with her. Bella was more than willing to go
but for fear of who her parents are and what they would do when they find out that
their daughter was permitted to go out of school posed a challenge. But she insisted
and said she would let her parents know. They reluctantly allowed her go with her.
She pleaded to be given back her phone so that she could call her parents which
they obliged.
She called her Dad and explained the situation at hand. Her Dad
permitted her and asked that she and her friend be brought to the family hospital
immediately. They moved immediately as Christy had gained consciousness but could
speak.
In less than 5hrs, they approached the hospital. Already waiting
for them was a them of Doctors and nurses alongside Bella's mom to receive them.
Mrs Duke, Bella's mom felt pity for the pretty girl on the stretcher. She was taken
to the emergency ward when all necessary test and diagnosis were carried out.
It was discovered that Christy's conditions was as a result of
stress as she was skipping meals and taking extra time after the group reading time
to further study. Her brain was over worked for her age. She was just 14 years old
hence her brain Condition. She was given some medications which made her feel a lot
better. She could now speak and was conscious of her environment. Mrs Duke had brought
her lots of fruits and a well prepared meal. She ate it with the assistance of Bella
as she was still very weak. Bella's Dad called to find out her she was responding
to treatment and promised to visit as soon as possible.
All efforts to reach Christy's
parents failed so Bella's parents had to take care of her. Bella was asked to go
back to school but she refused and rather suggested with plea that their exams be
shifted for both of them. Her mom Called the school authority and they were happy
to do her that favour as she had been of great help to the school from time past
till date.
The following day, some class representative came in their school
bus to visit Christy. She felt so loved and had fun with them the little time they
spent with her. Though she had not recovered, she felt better knowing how valuable
and cared for she was to her classmates. She had also being a great help to Rukky
and Sola before the exams even though they didn't start as friends.
Just before the school bus left, Christy parents arrived at the
hospital. She were shocked at the kind of hospital their daughter was admitted and
they wondered how on earth they would be able to clear off all the bills. They were
shown to their daughters private and executive Room where they were given a rowdy
welcome from the students.
Certainly astonished by the sight of the personality by the bed
side, they trembled. Mrs Duke stood up to greet them reaching out to give Mrs Albert
a huge and a pat on her back saying, "it's gonna be alright" in a very
subtle voice. She gave Mr Albert a hand shake as Christy faintly called," Daddy,
Mommy!! ".
The students left the room( though it was big enough to take
more people) on the instruction of the teacher who brought them. They dropped cards
and gifts which they came with and they all set out on their way back to school.
Mrs Duke took Christy's parents to the Doctor in charge to explain
what happened to their daughter while she also introduced herself and her daughter.
Christy and Bella had the opportunity to talk as true friends
and they got to know themselves better. They shared their dreams and future ambition.
Bella was already in love with Christy and decided never to let go of this good
heart she has found.
Mr and Mrs Albert on the other hand had the opportunity to meet
this angel God sent to rescue their daughter and they were indeptedly grateful to
Mrs Duke. While the parents were still talking and familiarizing, Bella asked Christy
if she would love to study abroad, she replied yes but that she wouldn't want to
put her parents under any financial pressure for the at course.
Bella asked her if she offers to help, it would be accepted by
her parents, though she wasn't sure she promised to ask her parents. Just then, their parents walked in and the Dukes left the room.
They were so full of joy to know that their she made a good friend who turned out
to be a life saver. They offered to clear the bills and offer anymore assistance
needed. They also took Christy as their adopted daughter as Bella was
their only daughter. They sponsored her through the secondary school and to the
tertiary institution of her choice.
Dr Duke, Bella's Dad also visited and met Christy's parents on
the day she was discharged. They exchanged pleasantries and Mr Albert was offered
a better job with Mrs Albert was sent on a training to facilitate her business and
better establish her. Right from then, their perception about friends began to change
and their new sermon was to properly guide children to have good friends. They now
understood that focus and interests could form the basis for any friendship to spring
up as was in the case of their daughter Christy.
Christy's choice of friendship brought a better life to the family.
My question now is, what should
be parent's approach to the kind of friends their children keep and what modalities
should be followed in helping them select friends as teens?
