Do Africans really love to read books?

A wise man once said that a person who won't read has no advantage over one who can't read. This is true. Reading is to the brain what food is to the body.  It energises, refills and ultimately gives an upper hand to the smartest person in the room.
It is believed that the typical African don't like books. A man once said that the way to hide anything from an African is to put such in a book and he won't get there.
This believe saddens my heart because, reading books enlightens and educates whoever, irrespective of status, age and skin colour. If reading has so much advantages and benefits, why then don't we read?
Pastor K. Komaiya once said " reading is to the mind, what feeding is to the body. Just as the body need food for growth and physical performance, the mind need knowledge for mental performance. One of the best ways to develop your mind and mental prowess is through reading. Endeavour to be a voracious reader". These words have embedded in them wisdom.
Its so painful to see people who venture into selling books sell less than expected.
Well, I will say that the reading culture has increased now compared to before now. From primary school, reading clubs are set up just to encourage young ones read from a tender age.
Speaking of reading for the young ones, a parent once told me that she would pay her children to read. I was amazed because, unlike some parents who totally frowned at this idea, I saw it from the perspective of that parent doing everything possible to ensure that her children read. And for me, the interior motive coupled with the determination is what matters.
Reading make one confident in speaking and writing. Show me a man or woman who reads a lot and I will tell you how intelligent such must be.
Reading helps in speaking and in conversations. This means that when you read a lot, you will be rich in words (in my words, you will be a well of words). It sure will help your vocabularies.
Someone once said that when you read books, you place yourself on the same level of reasoning with the writer. Reading exposes you to places, people and areas you don't ordinarily have access to. So why not deliberately develop interest in reading and watch your self grow beyond your expectations. It is never too late to develop a reading culture. Start from less voluminous books to the big ones.
Set a target for yourself to create time to read every month. Targets help you maintain a focus. A reader always stands out. They speak intelligently and are always willing to learn new things.
Don't be a typical African, pick up books and read!!
Would you love to start reading right away but you don't know where to get good books, look at the pictures above for info of some recommended great books that will help you grow and be balanced.

  1. Nice one, truth be told, reading habit has become overrated most especially in under developed area in any community and states, one reason be that, most parents now encourage exam malpractice, students have no interest to read or educate themselves on anything because they know whether they read or not they will pass any external exam so long the money is there to block and hire any machinery. Primary school teacher are favouring the rich kids just to earn small pocket from their parents, and the secondary parents they don't have time to check their children book and educational records. They claim they are very busy. Then coming to our university education.. Lectures tell you A for the gods, B for the intelligent, C for the Masses and D for the less privilege. And the educational commission of Nigeria are also too lazy because of the lazy selfish, foolish, greedy, stupid pocket they don't monitor educational settings and what goes in and what comes out of the system......I'll phase here.... But everyone just have to cultivate the habit of reading because even Daniel in the bible knew by book when the captivity of is real in Babylon was long over due for freedom..... Thanks for this article, how I wish all parents can get this and work with it..
